Mabey Hire supports engineers with accredited ICE Training Scheme

Mabey Hire is proud to announce that the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) has approved its structured training agreement to support its engineers’ professional development and enable them to apply their improved skills in the workplace.

As part of the structured training programme developed by Mabey Hire, graduate engineers are taken through the accredited training that enables them to develop the attributes of a professional engineer.

Stuart Thomas, Mabey Hire’s Chief Engineer, has formalised the in-house training and will drive it as a nominated Supervising Civil Engineer (SCE). Part of this role, as an experienced Chartered Engineer involves being a mentor, offering advice and guidance to support candidates through the process. SCEs are supported by Delegated Engineers (DEs) within the company, who help to steer and navigate candidates through the scheme.

Stuart said: “Mabey Hire is proud to be an approved employer of the ICE scheme and is committed to increasing the skills of its workforce for them to reach their full potential. This not only benefits existing employees and new recruits, but also the Company, enabling Mabey Hire to raise the standards of our engineers to design, supply and install solutions for their temporary works projects. It also encourages interaction between our three engineering hubs across the UK, through various workshops, discussions and sharing best practice.”

Working alongside their DE and SCE, Mabey Hire employees progress through a challenging process to complete an important stage of the qualification, Initial Professional Development (IPD). This is the first stage in achieving any ICE post graduate accreditation. As part of this colleagues must demonstrate how they meet nine attributes of a professional engineer, which includes Technical and Practical Applications of Engineering, Management and Leadership and Health, Safety and Sustainability.

The IPD submission is only completed following successful demonstration and attainment of the attributes at the required level and fulfilment of personal continuous professional development. The IPD submission is reviewed by both the company’s SCE and the ICE membership development officer. On successful completion of the IPD stage, the individual may then apply for membership at their chosen level (i.e. Incorporated or Chartered) with the Institution of Civil Engineers. This next stage is the Professional Review and requires a report to be submitted, an interview to be held and an essay to be written in exam conditions.

Mabey Hire has 70 engineers. Five of them are chartered – and four have achieved chartership during their Mabey Hire career. A further 28 have or are working towards professional qualifications through Mabey Hire’s own ICE-accredited training agreement.

John Holmes, Development Engineer, who is taking part in the scheme, said: "Mabey Hire has given me a fantastic opportunity to take part in the ICE training scheme, allowing career progression and supporting me along the journey to become a Chartered Engineer."
